The garden here in Vermont is approximately seven years old. When we took over the property there was nothing in the front but a square of gravel paths around a large Black Wattle.
My main aim was to soften the area and create a place of peace and colour seen from the main windows of the house. Fortunately there was a high wooden fence right around which enabled me to plant several climbing roses. 'Lamarque' rambles several metres and most of the year has dozens of blooms of creamy white flowers. The winter flowering 'Lorraine Lee' makes a leafy canopy. There's the beautiful 'Wedding Day', and over the carport the White Banksia rose.
In the small courtyard the Red Honeysuckle 'Lonicera' with its red and yellow perfumed flowers, climbs up and around a flowering cherry tree. Also here is a large Hebe creating protection for several pots of Fushia's. The Hebe is also covered in blooms during Autumn and is an attraction for birds.
As the front garden is small I've made good use of the off side and as this is shady have planted ferns and shade loving plants. Apart from several other Roses 'Albertine', 'General Galleni' and of course 'Iceberg', the real garden is varied. The old fashioned Wall-flowers, Bulbs in Spring, and two small Camellia's sasanqua Minature and weeping 'Mandy', also 'Cinnamon Cindy'.
Feeding is alternated, with the use of many leaves in Autumn, grass cuttings etc. There's no room for a compost heap, so the daily vegetable and fruit peelings etc. are dug into the ground producing excellent results. |
