Campaign focuses on Pool Safety Freddo Frog, one of Australia's most famous children’s characters, has released a Look Before You Leap Child Accident Prevention program on the internet. Mr Ron Smith, Managing Director - The Green Web said, "community awareness of the need for care to be taken at public swimming pools where hundreds of thousands of people, many of them very young are swimming or playing, is vital." "Pool Rules and the need for them to be followed are the key to maximising the safe use of public and private facilities." "Children can get excited and where you have water and slippery surfaces it is vital to walk carefully. Parents should also realise that young children need extremely tight supervision in public areas where there is water and a lot of people." All councils played a major role in providing recreation facilities such as swimming pools for public use and the fact that hundreds of thousands of people used these facilities meant there needed to be constant promotion and awareness of safety. "Councils have maximised the safety around their pools with good design, non slip surfaces and increased signage, however, in the end it is up to all people using the pools to be responsible for their own safety and that of others. Mr Smith urged parents to conduct a water safety audit of their gardens or farm. "Children can drown in as little as 5cm of water and apart from having private pools correctly fenced and with self closing gates, parents needed to always empty wading pools after use, ensure backyard ponds are covered to protect young children and empty out water from buckets." Mr Smith said, “water safety on farms where environmental hazards such as creeks and dams exist require people to have a fenced off area for young children to play as part of a water safety strategy."
